1st Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru (1947 to 1964)

India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru served as Prime Minister for 16 years and 286 days from 15 August 1947 to 27 May 1964. He was a freedom fighter. Nehru was a visionary leader who worked on India’s modernization, industrialization and technological progress. He is known as ‘Chacha Nehru’ for his unrelenting love for children. He is also called ‘Pandit Nehru’ because his family belonged to the Kashmiri Pandit community. He died on 27 May 1964 in the city of Delhi, he was the Prime Minister till his death.

3rd Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi (1966 to 1977 and 1980 to 1984)

Nehru’s daughter Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi served as India’s third Prime Minister twice consecutively, from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1984. He was instrumental in the Green Revolution in India and the nationalization of Indian banks. In 1971 East Pakistan, now Bangladesh played an important role in the liberation movement. He was killed by his bodyguards in 1986 after Operation Blue Star.

7th Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi (1984 to 1989)
