In this post, we shall learn about Important Dams in India. We might notice that in Competitive Exams like SSC, PSC, WBCS, USC, SBI BANKING, NABARD, etc. one or two questions have come from the River System of Important Dams in India. In short, as a Statistical GK, we must learn Important Das in India. While learning the Important Dams in India, we will take up one river system, at a time.

Important Dams on Indus River System

The most Important Dam on this River System is the BhakraDam. It is a famous Dam in India. It is built on the river Sutlej, in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh in northern India, with a height of 226 Meters. The Bhakra Dam is a gravity dam. Now what is a gravity Dam, well a gravity dam is a dam constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by primarily utilizing the weight of the fabric, alone to resist the horizontal pressure of water pushing against it. Its Reservoir is known as Govind Sagar Lake. Now it is the third-largest reservoir in India. The first being:

The First is Indra Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh.

The second is the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, build on the river Krishna Between Nalgonda District and  Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. 

The third is the Gobind Sagar Lake.

Next Dam is Maha Ranapratap Sagar Dam. It is a Gravity masonry Dam, built on the Beas, in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh.

Then  Ranjit Sagar Dam. It’s built on the river Ravi.

Then it is Du Hasti hydel Project it is built on Chandra River which is a tributary of Chandrabhaga River.

Then it is Salal Hydel Project built on the river Chandrabhaga River.

The next one is Baglihar Dam also known as Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project. It is a run of the river power project on the Chandrabhaga River, in the southern Doda district of Jammu Kashmir. When I say run of the river, it is a type of hydroelectric generation plant, whereby little or no water storage is provided.

Next Dam Kisan Ganga Hydroelectric Plant. It is again a run of the river hydroelectric plant on the Kisan Ganga River.

The next one is the Uri Dam, built on the river Jhelum in the Baramulla district of Jammu Kashmir.

Important Dams on Ganga River System

The first Dam would be the Tehri  Dam. It is the highest dam in India in Uttarakhand built on the Bagheera river, which is the headwaters of river Ganga. It is the highest dam in India, with a height of 261 meters and it is the eighth tallest dam in the world.

The next one is the Ramganga Dam. It’s built on the river Ram Ganga in Pauri Garhwal District, Uttarakhand.

Next one is the Bilaspur Dam. It’s built on the river Banas near the Deoli in Tonk District of Rajasthan.

Then we have Gandhi Sagar Dam and Jawahar Sagar Dam both on the river Chambal.

The next one is Gobinda Sagar Dam on Shahzad river in Lalitpur District of Uttar Pradesh. Now Gobindo Sagar Dam is completely different from Govinda Sagar razor-wire. Built on the river Satluj.

The next one is Rihand Dam. Rihand Dam is on Rihand River, which is a tributary of the Shone river.

Then we learn about two important barrages. when I say a barrage, is a diversion Dam that consists of a number of large Gates that can be opened or closed to control the amount of water passing through the structure and thus regulate and stabilize river water elevation upstream for use in irrigation and other systems. Now the two important barrages that we need to learn are (A) Indrapuri Barrage and (B) Farraka Barrage. Indrapuri Barrage is across the Shone river in Rohtas District of Bihar. Whereas Farakka Barrage is on the river Ganga and it is located between Murshidabad and Malda district in West Bengal.

Then we come to the dams on the tributaries of Bammoputra, one is Subansiri Lower Dam on Subansiri river.

Important Dams in Odisha

Here we have Mandira Dam built on the river Sankh in Sundergarth District of Orissa.

Then it Rngali Dam on Brahminy river in Angul District of Odisha.

Important Dams on Mahanadi River System

On this river, the Hirakud dam is built. This is the longest major earthen dam in India, measuring 25 points 8 kilometers.

The next one is the Gangrel Dam. Gangrel Dam is built on the river Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh. It is located in Dhamtari District.

The next one is the Dudhawa Dam, again on the river Mahanadi. It is also located in Dhamtari District of Chhattisgarh.

Important Dams on Godavari River System

Here we have Dharna Dam. Dharna Dam is a gravity dam on Dharna River. Which is a tributary of Godavari River.

Next comes Jayakwadi Dam. It is built by Paitan. It is one of the largest irrigation projects in India, the state of Maharashtra. It is a multipurpose project, the water is mainly used to irrigate agricultural land in the drought-prone Marathwada region of Maharashtra.

Next comes Indravati Dam. Now Indravati Dam is again a gravity dam on the Indravati River. It is about 90 kilometers from Bhagwani Patna in the state of Odisha.

Next is the Nizam Sagar Dam. It is constructed across the Manjeera River. Which is a tributary of the Godavari in Nizamabad district in Telangana.

Important Dams on Krishna River System

Here we have Koyna Dam. It is built on the river Koyna which is a tributary of Krishna.

The next one is the Ujjain Dam. It is also known as Bhima Dam or Bhima Irrigation Project, built on the River Bhima. Which is a tributary of the river Krishna.

Then it is Mallaprabha Dam. Mallaprabha Dam is built across Mallaprabha River in Belagaum Karnataka. Which is a tributary of river Krishna.

Next one the Tungabhadra Dam. Now it is constructed across Tungabhadra River. Which is again a tributary of Krishna.

The Srisailem Dam. It is constructed across the Krishna River, in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh.

Next one the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. This was built across River Krishna at Nagarjun Sagar. Where the river forms the boundary between Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh and Nalgonda District in Telangana. It has the second-biggest water Reservoir in India.

Important Dams on Kaveri River System

Here we find Kaveri Dam. Which is built on the river Kaveri, in the district of Mysore.

The next one is Mettur Dam. Now it is one of the largest Dam in India. Built across the river Kaveri.

Next one is the Krishna Raj Sagar Dam. This dam is again built across river Kaveri.

Then it is Bhavani Sagar Dam, built on the Bhavani River. Which is a tributary of Kaveri, located in Erode district of Tamilnadu. It is one of the world’s largest earthen dam. Earthen Dam means it is made up of soil material.

Then comes the Amaravathy Dam constructed across the Amaravathy River.

Next one is Hemavathy Dam. It is constructed across the river Hemavathy. Which is an important tributary of the river Kaveri.

Important Dams on Vaigai River System

Next one is Vaigai Dam. Vaigai Dam is built across Vaigai river.Vaigai river in the Theni District of Tamilnadu.

Next one is the Manimuthar Dam, built across Manimuthar River. Which is a major tributary of Tamra Pawnee River.

The Important Dams in Kerala

The first one is Malmpuzha Dam. Built on the Malmpuza river. It forms the largest reservoir in the state of Kerala.

The next one is the Idduki Dam and it is known as one of the highest arch dams of Asia. It is constructed across the river Periyar. The water stored here is used for irrigation and drinking purpose.

Then we have Neyyar Dam on the Neyyar River.

Important Dams on Narmada River System

On the River Narmada, we have three important dams and they are Omkareshwar DamIndira Sagar, and Sardar Sarovar Dam.

The Indira Sagar Dam is built on the Narmada, in the Khandoya district of Madhya Pradesh. It withholds the largest reservoir in India.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a gravity dam on the Narmada River, near Nowgown Gujarat. Four Indian states that is Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan received water and electricity supplied from this dam.

Then we have Sabarmati Dam on Sabarmati River.

Kadana Dam on Mahi River.

Ukai Dam on Tapi River.

Mithi Dam on Mithi River.

and Salaulim Dam on Salaulim River.
